Caterpillars destroying coconut trees kept at bay

A new caterpillar species which threatened coconut plantations in the Mundala Divisional Secretariat Division in Marawila, Puttalam has been controlled by using a chemical called 'Monacotapus', said a spokesman for the Coconut Cultivation Board.

He said nearly 6,000 coconut trees in Mangala Eliya and Navadamkuliya have been devastated by this poisonous caterpillar species.

Owners of coconut plantations in the area threatened by the spread of the caterpillar can contact the Board Regional Manager at Marawila for quick remedial action, said Board's General Manager R.D.L. Dharmasiri.
