President’s Counsel Kalinga Indathissa said that if they had not fought for Susanthika and saved her from baseless allegations over doping, Sri Lanka would have not won an Olympic Silver medal in 2000.

Revealing a 15 year old secret, Indathissa further said that she was subjected to doping tests due to interferences by unauthorized persons out of the proper procedures in an attempt to keep her out of athletics two years before she could win the Olympic silver medal.

He made these remarks at a press conference which announced celebrity athlete Susanthika Jayasinghe's 15th anniversary of the 2000 Sydney Olympic victory, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute yesterday.

Susanthika Jayasinghe , became the nation's first Olympic medalist since 1948, when she finished behind Marion Jones and Pauline Davis-Thompson in the Women's 200 meters in Sydney Olympics in 2000.

On October 5, 2007 Marion Jones pleaded guilty for taking performance enhancing drugs prior to the 2000 Olympics, and Jayasinghe was later awarded the silver medal.

Although Susanthika was suspended in April 1998 for being tested positive for Nandrolone which was a result of a conspiracy, later she was later cleared of the offence.

Speaking on the occasion Susanthika talked about the proposed Susanthika Jayasinghe Sports Fund and Website and her autobiography which will be launched on October 7 at the same venue.

I want to set up the Susanthika Jayasinghe Athletic Academy because I want to help talented youngsters in our country to develop their skills to reach national and international levels. I know how much I had to suffer during my career. I want to ensure a better environment for next generation of athletes so that they can go for Olympic medals one day. Steps have already been taken towards making this project a reality with the blessings of President Maithripala Sirisena”, she said.

“I intend to launch Susanthika Jayasinghe Autobiography written by me in two languages, ‘Susanthika Jayasinghe Sports Fund and ‘Website’, and also to present the project proposal of ‘Susanthika Jayasinghe Academy’ to President Sirisena. The best male and female school athletes of the year will also be felicitated at the event.”

She also reminded that she faced many obstacles on her way to win the Olympic medal and also how officials and authorities ill-treated her during that time.
