Backhoe operator falls to his death

A backhoe operator fell to his death from a moving machine as he leaned to inspect a drain he was dredging near the Galle Fort railway track. This was revealed at the inquest on the death of Damith Hewage Madusanka, 23, a resident of Pitipana by City Coroner Edward Ahangama on July 19. Giving evidence at the inquest, witness Sanjeewa Nimal Pathirana, a contractor, said on the day of the incident, Damith was operating the backhoe machine.

He said he saw Damith leaning to a side to inspect the drain he was dredging when he lost balance and fell and was buried in the soil.

He was extricated from the debris and was taken to the Nagoda Hospital and later to the National Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. AJMO D.I.L. Ratnayake who conducted the postmortem attributed death to spinal, pelvic and bowel injuries. A verdict of accidental death was returned.

PC Piyasena led evidence. PS Lal Pathirana assisted in the inquest.
