Protect environment when carrying out development activities - President

All are duty bound to protect and safeguard the environment for the future generation when carrying out development activities and taking decisions, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

The President was addressing government officials while participation in the progress review meeting of the Environment and Renewable Energy Ministry yesterday.

Drawing attention on replanting activities of the Environment and Renewable Energy Ministry, the President advised officials to plant trees, which are suitable to the country and environment when replanting is carried out.

It has been proved that certain foreign varieties of trees are not suitable to the environment. The President instructed that local varieties of trees be planted by road sides to add natural beauty and to protect the environment.

"When constructing roads, two strips of land should be allocated on both sides of the roads to plant trees," he added.

The President also advised Gem and Jewellery Authority officials to streamline the licence issuing mechanism for gem mining and sand mining.

"No one should be allowed to use heavy machinery for gem mining since this has a negative effect on the environment," he said. The President said the need of the hour is to amend the prevailing Acts for gem mining, sand mining, metal blasting and crushing.

"Those Acts should be people friendly," he said.

The President directed officials to find a permanent solution to the human - elephant conflict and also highlighted the need to allocate a designated area for elephants.
