Harvard Faculty to assist Lankan dentists

The Dental Faculty of the Harvard University, U.S has expressed its willingness to assist Sri Lankan dentists to gain new knowledge on modern dentistry.

This is the world's oldest (established in 1867) and U.S' first Dental Faculty, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, the Dental Faculty of the Harvard University, U.S conducts extensive research on dentistry. It will offer knowledge, experience and study courses on dental implants, Aesthetic dentistry and restorative dentistry to Sri Lankan dentists.

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said annually, two million Sri Lankan school children are examined for dental problems and free dental care is provided. But, in spite of free dental care, two persons die from some type of oral cancer every three days here.

"On most occasions, oral cancer occurs among Sri Lankans due to Betel chewing and smoking," he said.

"Minister Sirisena held bilateral discussions with Harvard University Dental Faculty Dean Prof. Bruce Donoss during his recent visit to Harvard University. The agreement was reached during the discussions," the spokesman added.
