Ramazan programme at Nawala Jumma Mosque

Several programmes will be conducted at the Nawala Jumma Mosque during the Ramazan fasting month. Tharaveeh prayers will be conducted daily at 8.15 p.m. by Hafis Nazeema and Hafis M. Saifullah.

Vithr prayers will be conducted daily after Tharaveeh prayers by Mowlavi Alhaj M.B.M. Mubarak and Mowlavi Alhaj M.N.M. Fardhy. Hisbu recital of the Quran will be after Vithr prayers. Religious lectures will be conducted on Saturday and Sunday after Vithr prayers. Lailathul Qadar activities will commence after Tharaveeh prayers and continue until midnight. Thawaba and Zikir Majlis will be conducted on July 11, 18 and 25 August 1. Badr Mowlood will be recited after Vithr prayers on July 25 with a special Dua recital.

The recital of the Kathamul Quran in the name of Prophet Muhammed will be on the 29th day of the Ramazan fast.

Research seminar

A research seminar on information literacy organised by the National Institute of Library and Information Sciences (NILIS), University of Colombo will be held on today at 9 a.m. at the NILIS auditorium. The programme will be evaluated and further developed at the seminar, taking into consideration of the new ICT environment.


The 20th Annual General Meeting of Thurstan College Junior Old Boys' Union will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the college auditorium. Members are requested to be present at 2.30 p.m. 

Mihindu Perahera

The annual Mihindu Maha Perahera of the Kirillapona Sri Pushparama Viharaya will parade the streets today at 8.24 p.m.

It will feature elephants and Kandyan, upcountry, low country and Sabaragamuwa dance troupes.

Nedungamuwe Raja will carry the Relics Casket.

The perahera route will be High Level road, Polhengoda Junction, Kirillapona Mawatha and back to the temple. A special pinkama began at the Viharaya on July 6 as a prelude to the Mihindu Perahera and will continue daily with features such as Aloka Pooja Perahera, Pavada Perahera, Kumbal and Randoli Perahera.

Viharadhipati Ven. Dodampahala Rahula Thera delivered a special Dhammadesana yesterday.

Feast of Our Lady of Rose Mystica

The Feast of Our Lady of Rose Mystica will be celebrated tomorrow.

Tewatte Basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Sri Lanka at Ragama will celebrate the feast with a Holy Mass at noon after the recitation of Holy Rosary. There will be festive High Mass at Kadolkele Church dedicated to the Risen Lord and at Periyamulla Church dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows.

At Wattala, Galwetiya Church dedicated to Our Lady of Rosary will celebrate Holy Mass in honour of Our Lady of Mystical Rose at 11 a.m. and at Dalugama Church dedicated to St Francis de Salle will commence the day with the recitation of 15 decades of the Rosary at 10 a.m. and litany of Our Lady of Mystical Rose.

This will be followed by noon festive High Mass in honour of Our Lady the Mystical Rose.

CRAN to launch Child Centric Budget Analysis

The Child Rights Advocacy Network (CRAN) in Sri Lanka will launch the Child Centric Budget Analysis under the theme 'Resourcing Child Rights' on July 15 at the BMICH, Colombo. The event will take place under the patronage of the Child Development and Women's Affairs Ministry and the Office of the Advisor on Reconciliation to the President.

Child Development and Women's Affairs Minister Tissa Karaliyadda will be the Chief Guest while Finance and Planning Deputy Minister Dr Sarath Amunugama will be the Guest of Honour.


A lecture on "Reminiscences of an interesting and varied life in two countries" will be delivered by tea planter, sportsman and herpetologist Trevor LaBrooy at the Meteorological Department Auditorium (opposite BMICH) on July 15 at 6.00 pm.

After migrating to Australia in 1965, he served in the Queensland State and the Federal Government of Australia as a Superintendent on outback Aboriginal communities, before retiring as Deputy Director of the Aboriginal Development Commission in Darwin.

The Wildlife and Nature Protection Society is organising the lecture.

Golden Jubilee

The 1963 group of the University of Ceylon will celebrate their Golden Jubilee at a Luncheon at Mt Lavinia Hotel on July 14 at 10 am. Professors W.D. Lakshman and Savithri Goonesekere will address the gathering. The event will be chaired by the Peradeniya University Vice Chancellor. Scholarships will also be awarded to needy undergraduates of the Peradeniya and Colombo Universities.

P. H. M. Sunimal of 123/B Ethiwataya Road, Amandoluwa, Seeduwa, an employee attached to the Seeduwa Post Office is suffering from acute renal failure. Doctors treating him have recommended a kidney transplant following dialysis treatment.

Iron gates for level crossings

Bandula Gunasekara, Malimbada Group Corr

Iron gates are to fixed at unprotected railway crossings in the Matara District to avoid rail-road mishaps. Steps have already been taken to place orders to make these gates.

Over Rs 35,000 will be spent to make the iron gates, railway sources said.
