PSC best platform to deal with any national problem - Keheliya

The Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) is the best platform to deal with any national problem in a democratic manner, Mass Media and Information Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said.

Responding to a question by a journalist at the Cabinet press briefing at the ministry auditorium yesterday, the minister said all political parties must realise that the PSC is the best mechanism set out in the Constitution to solve any critical issue pertaining to the country, adding that it is the responsibility of all parties to join in this endeavour.

He said the Opposition staying away from the PSC process to discuss amendments to the Constitution shows that the Opposition has no genuine interest to obtain a long lasting solution to the national problems in the county.

"Instead, they prefer if the situation becomes further complex," he said.

The minister said the government has now decided to direct the amendment regarding the merger and demerger of the Provincial Councils to the PSC, without presenting it to Parliament as the 19th Amendment to the Constitution as proposed earlier.

Government Information Department Director General Prof. Ariyarathna Athugala and News Director Wasanthapriya Ramanayake also participated.
