Rahula recapture Ruhunu Master’s trophy

Rahula College recaptured the Ruhunu Masters trophy by defeating St Thomas’s College by two goals to nil in their annual football encounter played at Uyanwatta under flood lights last Friday.

Three wins in a row has eluded the Thomian’s for the third time in the twelve year history of the Golden Pennant football encounter.

Rahula skipper Ravindu Kaweesha scored the first goal fifteen minutes in to the game. Rahula had possession of the ball during most of the first half missing three easy opportunities and led one goal to nil at half time.

The Thomians’ played with vigor in the second half with Rahula’s goalie Tharaka Pathirana depriving them of scoring on more than half a dozen occasions. The Thomian’s could not capitalize even after Rahula’s vice captain Lakshan Kawinda Wimalaguna was shown the red card and sent off the field twenty minutes in to the second half. Janith Lakpriya scored the second goal for Rahula ten minutes before

the final whistle.

Referee S L Y Arfath did a good job keeping the game under control together with line judges K P D Ranjith and Mahesh Wijethunga. Indunil Wickremasuriya was the fourth referee.

SSP Matara Deshabandu Tennakone was the chief guest while former SP Matara Premathileke Hettiarachchi who initiated the annual encounter twelve years ago was the special guest of honor.
