Conference for public servants

A national conference on "Performance Appraisals for Public Service and Good Governance" will be held at "The Winchester" Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo today at 8.30 am.

Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga will deliver the key note address. The objective of the conference is to introduce a methodology for the development of measurement of performance of public servants especially the staff grade officers.

The conference is organized by the Public Service Commission in association with the National Salaries and Cadre Commission, Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry, Public Management Reforms Ministry, Management Services Department, Information and Communication Technology Agency, Postgraduate Institute of Management and the Asian Development Bank.


B Onion cultivation promoted in Matale

The Agriculture Department will promote the Big Onion cultivation in the Matale district by providing facilities for farmers.

The department will set up 2,000 Big Onion stores for farmers. About 600 stores have been constructed. Another 500 stores are coming up in the Dambulla agricultural zone at a cost of Rs.12.5 million on World Bank aids.

The balance will be set up within the next two years, officials said. Over 6,000 Onion growers are engaged in the cultivation in the district.


Job market for youths

A job market for unemployed youths and aspirants of employment in the Matara district will be held on July 13 at the Royal Junior School at Telijjawila, Malimbada.

Samadhi Community Development Foundation director Buddika Pathirana said over 500 jobs in the private sector institutions and non governmental organizations are expected through the job market.


Thihagoda organic manure project progressing

The Organic Manure Production Project in the Thihagoda Pradeshiya Sabha division is progressing, PS chairman Nirmal Samarasinhe said.

According to the chairman, garbage, waste and hard waste collected in the Thihagoda and Yatiyana, Naduala, Naimbala and Polatugoda towns and other Grama Niladari divisions in the Thihagoda Predeshiya Sabha area are recycled and converted them into compost manure.

Cultivators prefer compost fertilizer to chemical fertilizer. The project has contributed to environmental protection, residents said. It has also created direct and indirect job opportunities for the youths.

The project was jointly funded by the Southern Provincial Council and the Pradeshiya Sabha, chairman said.


Drama festival

A 3 Day Fair and Drama Festival organized by the Welfare Society of War Heroes' Families of Yalwele, Mahiyangana, would be held at the Galbokke School play ground on July 12, 13 and 14 evening.


Trade Fair

A Trade Fair organized by the Kalutara District Secretariat jointly with the Manpower and Traders Department, would be held at the Kalutara Maha Vidyalaya on July 13, from 9.00 a.m to 2.00 p.m.

School leavers of the Kalutara district, would also be contacted by various institutes, where suitable employment opportunities would be available to them at the trade air."


BDCF holds Committee Meeting

A special committee meeting of the Badulla District Citizens' Forum would be held on July 12 at 2 pm at its Head Office in Hali-Ela.

Lecturer Chameera Perera would be the Chief Guest.


Free missionary training for monks

The International Buddhist Organization intends to provide missionary training to monks in English.

There will be an examination to select suitable monks for the one year course.
