Maids to be categorised as housekeepers

Equipped with National Vocational Qualification-Level 3, Sri Lankan migrant domestic workers to Saudi Arabia in the future will be categorised housekeepers, a notch above their former occupational classification 'house maids'.

Their minimum salary will be upped to Saudi Riyal 900 (Rs. 32,000) from the earlier SR 750.

The change will come into effect immediately on the instructions from Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment Bureau (SLBFE) sources said yesterday.

The SLBFE recently upgraded its training institutes to National Vocational Qualification 3 level/standard, targetting domestic aides and made it compulsory for such migrant worker aspirants to obtain qualifications prior to going abroad.

The occupational classification associated with the NVQ Level 3 qualifications for domestic workers is house keeping assistant, according to international labour regulations.

SLBFE sources said the above classification for migrant domestic workers will be extended to other countries as well from 2014. In the future, migrant domestic workers job classification will be displayed as House Keeping Assistants in their passports, job agreements and other related documents.

SLBFE sources said they advised foreign employment agencies to increase the salary of such workers from SR 750 to SR 900 and also include enhanced benefits such as free air tickets, food, lodging and medical facilities in the job agreements inline with existing regulations.

In 2012, 58,299 domestic workers migrated to Saudi Arabia for employment and within the first five months of this year 19,445 workers have migrated for work as domestic aides.
