Missing jewellery, cash: officer arrested
An officer working in a pawning branch of Thirunelvely People's bank
has been taken into custody with 20 gold jewellery and cash by Kopay
Police in connection with the missing gold jewellery pawned in the bank.
As the internal audit officers are investigating into cash shortage in
the bank the exact amount of cash stolen could not be ascertained.
Primary school development drive
The development works in Primary schools in the Northern Province
have commenced. Each school will be developed at Rs. 500,000. The
development work will have to be completed within a month. Painting,
renovation of toilets, water supply, rehabilitation of play ground,
repairs and providing electricity connections would be attended to using
the funds. The object of the development programme is to convert the
village schools as children's paradise.
Request for a heart surgery facility
Dr. Sri Bavananda Acting Director Jaffna Teaching hospital and the
President, Teaching Hospital Supervisory Committee Prof. Pon
Balasundarampillai a requested to the British Parliamentary Members to
provide a new heart surgery section as there is no adequate facilities
for heart surgery at the Jaffna hospital. The patients are being sent to
Colombo and Kandy for operations. They said Rs. 500 million is needed
for additional surgical equipment.
The visiting parliamentary group assured that they would present this
matter when they go back to England and examine the feasibility of
meeting their request.
Vadamaradchy students to get free milk
The Vadamaradchy East students are issued with a cup of cows milk
daily to increase nutrition in their daily intake. Cows milk is issued
in seventeen schools in the Vadamaradchy region. Students from grade one
to eleven are given this free nutrient. When the necessary quantum of
milk cannot be got in the locality milk is bought from private farms in
Vathiry or Alvai. This is a sustenance to poor children who forgo the
morning meal due to poverty.
Punishment for misbehaviour
Four persons who were behaving in a manner to commit breach of peace
were produced by Kopay police before the Jaffna Magistrate. They pleaded
guilty to the charge preferred against them.
The magistrate ordered two of them to clean the Kopay Police station
premises and other two to clean Chemanai road including Irupalai. The
accused are from Kopay and Chemani villages.
High fare for Colombo
Three passengers who boarded a private bus bound to Colombo at
Bastian junction A9 road Jaffna asked for a ticket to Vavuniya. They
were charged Rs. 250. the passengers protested why a high fare was
changed from them. The conductor had said that as the bus was bound to
Colombo they had to pay a high fare. The passengers disputed and an
altercation ensued. The conductor and the driver had allegedly assaulted
them. In the course of the brawl, a passenger was alleged to have been
pushed out of the bus. He had fallow under the wheels and crushed.
He was rushed to the hospital but he had succumbed at the hospital.
Warning to fishermen
The Assistant Director of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development
Department has issued a warning to the effect that the fishermen who
trespass into Vadamarchy, East sea and fish illegally using prohibited
fishing gears and “Chool” (a torch made out of coconut and palmyra
leaves) will be severely dealth with and their fishing gear and catch
will be confiscated. |
