Rural roads to be developed

Two rural roads stretching from Akuramboda to Olaganwatta and Kosgolla in the Pallepola Divisional Secretariat area are being renovated under the Gemi Diriya programme. The renovation projects when completed, will serve over 500 families in the area.

The Economic Development Ministry has allocated Rs 20 lakhs for the project.


School vans with defects rounded up

Police who checked around 200 vans transporting schoolchildren in Kalutara and nearby areas yesterday, nabbed 70 vans with defects.

The van owners were given 10 days to repair their vehicles.


Students, driver injured in accident

Eleven students and a van driver were injured when the school van they were traveling, met with an accident at Nittambuwa, Horagolla yesterday morning.

The van crashed into a private bus due to the van driver’s carelessness, the Police said.

Six students were admitted to Wathupitiwala Hospital and the others to the Colombo National Hospital. Investigations are continuing.


Flat dwellers set off to maintain flats

The Housing Authority has initiated repairs and maintenance of Soysapura Flats with the help of flat dwellers. The flat dwellers will register with the Condominium Flat Dwellers’ Association. Each family will pay a monthly membership of Rs 100.

The government has provided a grant of Rs. 145,000 to each Flat Dwellers’ Association to start the project.


Over 50 acres destroyed in forest fire

The Police and the Air Force extinguished a fire that broke out at the Somawathiya forest reserve yesterday around 10am.

Reports estimate over 50 acres were destroyed by the fire.

Pulastipura Police are investigating.


De La Salle Walk and Musical Fete – 2012

To mark De La Salle College's 107 years of service rendered in education, the Old Boys’ Union of the College has organized the annual De La Salle Walk and Mega Musical Fete – 2013 on August 4.

The members of the LaSallian family including His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, leading politicians, priests, business leaders, professionals, Old Boys, College Staff together with over 1,200 students clad in colourful costumes, will march to the first ever WALK to one drum beat in the vicinity of Colombo North. A special feature will be the colouful motor rally on Saturday from 3 pm onwards.

A mega musical fete with the band Sanidhapa will entertain the gathering at the College grounds.

Proceeds of the event will be utilised for the purchase of a 32 seater bus for the College.


Religious events

A number of religious events, organised by the Kumarasiri Hettige Foundation will take place at “Yamuna”, Kosmodara in Kotapola, Deniyaya on August 4 and 5.

The events, organised to coincide with the 3rd month death anniversary of Mrs. H.G.B. Hettige, the mother of Parliamentary Affairs Secretary, Kumarasiri Hettige, include Bana followed by an alms giving to 100 bikkhus.

Other social welfare deeds scheduled are, distributing presents to Dhamma school teachers, wheelchairs to the disabled, sewing machines to low income families and a tree planting programme.


Inter-school Drama Competition 2012

The Inter-School Shakespeare Drama Competition – 2012 organized by the Colombo YMCA and the Rotary Club of Colombo North will be held in September/October 2012.

This annual competition which commenced in 1973 attracts entries from leading schools throughout the island.

The plays selected for this year's competition are:

Julius Caesar
Pericles, Prince of Tyre
Richard II
Romeo and Juliet
The Writer's Tale
Two Gentlemen of Verona

St. Henry’s College OBA AGM

“Henricians Colombo”- the Colombo OBA of Ilavalai St. Henry's College will hold their AGM and Annual get-together on Saturday August 4. at “Global Tower Hotel”, Marine Drive, Wellawatte, Colombo 6 from 11.00 am onwards.

M A Sumanthiran MP is the chief guest for the event, and A Selvam Adaikalanathan MP a Henrician himself, will be the Guest of Honour. St. Henry's Rector Rev Fr J Anton Jesuthas, will also be in attendance.

Following the AGM, old boys and their families will be hosted to the traditional fellowship lunch.

All old Henricians are requested to attend the AGM, by the president Meno Thiruchelvam.


Rift in Jaffna lawyers' association

The Jaffna Lawyers Association has split into two. A section of the lawyers has expressed dissatisfaction with the lawyers who had not taken action against those who caused disrepute to the Jaffna judge and helped those who defamed the judge.
