Activities around Negombo Lagoon:
Threat to mangroves
Disna MUDALIGE
The unscrupulous activities of a few hoteliers have posed a threat to
ecosystems and mangroves of the Negombo Lagoon.
These hoteliers are allegedly using the names of powerful politicians
and VIPs to continue their illegal activities.
The lagoon has been filled without a limit to expand the tourist
hotels. The destruction of the lagoon bank and mangroves could be
witnessed due to their activities.
The construction of buildings within the lagoon could also be seen
making a greater harm to the lagoon. As revealed these hoteliers have
taken over state land in Negombo lagoon by paying money to the
Divisional Secretariat Division (DSD). They have abused the licenses
given by the DSD to expand their businesses without a concern on the eco
system of the area.
Paying attention to this situation, Environment Minister Anura
Priyadarshana Yapa has directed officials to look into the matter
immediately and implement the law strictly against the offenders. The
Spokesman of the ministry told the Daily News that the District
Secretariats could not lease out the lands according to the law. |
