President strongly objects to paddy land-filling
Warns officials not to support such moves :
President Mahinda Rajapaksa at a meeting held to review the progress
of government development projects in the Gampaha district, Saturday
strongly objected to the filling of paddy lands and warned state
officials not to support or encourage any such move.
He told both government officials and politicians to be vigilant and
prevent any paddy lands from being filled.
The President during the meeting discussed with officials the
progress of development work in various sectors in the district.
He pointed out to officials that peoples needs and aspirations have
changed over time. “The public who requested us to rid the country of
terrorism in the past is now asking for highways, carpeted roads, fly
overs, buildings and all inclusive development.
“All people's representatives should shed their petty political
rivalry and work in unison to make these aspirations a reality,” he
said.
The President discussed with officials regarding issues such as
health, education, food security and also efforts at guiding the
youngsters of the district in the correct path.
He prevailed upon officials the importance of building a disciplined
and morally rich society and requested them to work towards it. It was
noted by officials that projects to provide safe drinking water to the
public and efforts to mitigate floods had yielded very positive results.
The President also discussed with officials on the progress of local
industries in the district. He instructed them to renovate dilapidated
health centres and schools.
Whilst noting that there has been impressive progress in development
work in all the sectors. The President told officials and politicians
from the district to further improve on these achievements to fullfill
people's expectations and aspirations.
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and other politicians
representing the Gampaha district, Secretary to the P{resident
Lalith Weeratunga, other ministry secretaries and state officials
attended.
