Rains lash Rajarata

Heavy rains were reported in Rajarata ending the lengthy spell of drought in the region that led to crop failure and hardships to the farmer community.

Although there were rains in the first few months of the year, drought set in with the arrival of the Maha season resulting in the drying up of tanks and reservoirs in Rajarata badly affecting paddy cultivation and other agricultural crops.

Ending the spell of prolonged drought, heavy rains were reported in Horowpathana, Galenbindunuwewa, Mihintale, Medawachchiya, Huruluwewa, Thambuttegama, Nachchaduwa, Kahatagasdigiliya in the Anuradhapura district and several areas in the Polonnaruwa district.

Farmers welcomed the rains that gave them hope for the resumption of the cultivation activities.
