Royal Park murder case:
Accused sentenced to death
Lenient sentence overturned for first time :
A two judge Bench of the Court of Appeal
yesterday sentenced to death the accused in the Royal Park murder
case, Shramantha Jude Anthony Jayamaha, dismissing his appeal filed
against the High Court verdict that imposed a 12 - year term of
imprisonment and a Rs 50,000 fine.
Army strength in Jaffna 10,000
The statement that there is an army strength of
one to five civilians in the Jaffna peninsula was categorically
denied by Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya
yesterday at the Army Headquarters.
Armed escort for PHIs
An armed police or Tri-force personnel would be
sent with Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) and other health officials
during mosquito control activities, Health Minister Maithripala
Sirisena said. The minister said that this step would be initiated
to ensure security of the PHIs during their duty. Addressing a press
conference at the ministry premises yesterday, he said that he held
special discussions in this regard with the IGP and the President.
