The minister was addressing a special media briefing of the Sri Lanka
Freedom Party yesterday at the Mahaveli Centre Colombo.
He said: “A considerable number of people are seeking SLFP
nominations to contest the forthcoming PC elections. So far 367 have
applied for nominations. However there are only 127 UPFA slots of which
only 108 members will be elected from all parties for the three PCs.
“The Northern Provincial Council election will be held within one
year, probably before September 2013. New politicians, suppressed for
over 30 years by the LTTE gun culture will contest at this election.
Some people who stood for the LTTE are now clamouring for an election in
the North” the minister said.
Referring to mud slinging campaigns by some websites against
politicians, artistes and other reputed personalities, Minister
Alahapperuma said a politician who lives in a muddy mess is behind the
mud slinging campaign. He has got accustomed to tarnishing the images of
others, he added. Environment Minister, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said, “
the government has taken steps for the betterment of the people. New
employment opportunities have been created, mega development activities
are in progress and education and health facilities are being upgraded.”
Every opportunity is with the UPFA to obtain a significant victory at
this election, Minister Yapa said.
