Police unit to protect Galle archaeological sites

A special police unit to provide security for archaeological sites and monuments in the Galle district was established in Galle Fort under the directions of Southern Province DIG Hector Dharmasiri and Galle SSP Vaas Gunawardane.

The unit has been directed to launch constant security operations and investigations into the incidents of ravaging archaeological sites and monuments, treasure hunting and mishandling of antiques and to take strict legal measures against the offenders.

There are about 173 archaeological sites and monuments in the Galle district. Fifty four places have been proclaimed as archaeological reserves through gazette notifications.
