Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

Green economy should not act as brake on development

‘Developed countries should help protect environment’:

President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Wednesday said addressing the environmental crisis should not be a burden for developing countries alone. He said developed countries, which largely contribute to the environmental crisis, cannot and should not leave the responsibility of saving the environment to developing countries, at the cost of their economic development.

President meets Chilean, Bhutanese leaders

President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Brazil to attend the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, met the President of Chile Sebastian Pinera and Bhutan’s Prime Minister Jigme Thinley at Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday. President Rajapaksa and President Pinera engaged in talks on the sidelines of the conference.

Northern farmers provided know-how in modern methods under Divi Neguma

The Economic Development Ministry has set up a farmer training institute in Kanagarayankulum named Divi Neguma Training Centre with a view to arming farmers with modern technology, methods and knowledge of present day farming. Livestock Development Officer of the Divi Neguma Training Centre K Janaki said the Centre was established to train farmers in Vavuniya and surrounding districts.

‘Nationality of boat tragedy victims yet to be confirmed’

External Affairs Ministry sources yesterday said Indonesian Forces rescued 110 persons who were on board the boat that capsized in the seas off Christmas Island, Australia. External Affairs Ministry Additional Secretary Sarath Dissanayake said over 60 bodies were found by Indonesian authorities in the area where the boat is believed to have capsized.
