Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

 

 

A prize catch : Chilaw Police Intelligence Unit officers acting on a tip-off, arrested a woman in possession of an elephant tusk with an intricate carving at Wilattewa, Chilaw, while planning to sell it for Rs 2.4 million. Police said investigations revealed the woman employed abroad for nearly eight years, had smuggled the tusks on her return from Cyprus. BOC achieves unique landmark:

First Rs one trillion balance sheet in corporate sector

Bank of Ceylon (BOC), the premier state bank in the country, reached a landmark achievement by recording a Rs one trillion balance sheet as at end May this year. “We, as the national bank in the country, were working towards a target of 01,10,12 to achieve the one trillion balance sheet, Rs 10 billion profit by 2012 and achieved this significant milestone seven months prior to the targeted date,” Bank of Ceylon Chairman Dr Gamini Wickramasinghe said.

Anti-dengue drive:

Minister bemoans lukewarm response from govt departments

The country has 45 ministries, but only nine have appointed Dengue Control Committees. Only four out of 90 departments have responded to the circular by the Secretary to the President directing all government institutions to set up Dengue Control Committees, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said. “There are 33 authorities, 30 boards, 24 corporations and 21 commissions in the country. But Dengue Control Committees have been set up only in one each of the above bodies.

More evidence of Balangoda man

Pre-historic human skeleton unearthed in SL for first time :

Excavations at the Pahiyangala cave in Bulathsinhala, Kalutara confirmed that homo sapiens had settled in Sri Lanka 40,000 years ago, Deputy Director of Archaeology Dr Nimal Perera said. A skeleton of the Balangoda man was found at the excavation site of the Pahiyangala cave a few days ago, he said. It was the first time that a pre-historic human skeleton was unearthed in Sri Lanka, Dr Perera said. Following the excavation, more evidence was found about the Balangoda man including his food items, rituals and also equipment made out of stone used by him, he said.
