Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

[May 09 2013]

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

 

 

The Minneriya National Park which lies in the Polonnaruwa district was declared
a sanctuary on July 29, 1938. It became a National Park on August 12, 1997. The Minneriya reservoir built by King Mahasena continues to play a pivotal role in the agricultural activities of the district as it did centuries ago. This reservoir is fed mainly by the Mahaweli irrigation scheme through the Yoda Ela. The forests are home to various animals with elephants being the flagship species of the Park. Government refutes press report:

No amendments to SAFTA

‘Trade agreements must not affect local production’:

The government has not taken a decision to restrict imports from India, Mass Media and Information Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said. The minister made this statement refuting a report in an English daily yesterday, while addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing at the ministry.

President on two-day official visit to Cuba

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will pay an official visit to Cuba today and tomorrow. An MoU will be signed between Sri Lanka and Cuba during the President’s visit, Mass Media and Information Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said. He said it will be signed between the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies of Sri Lanka and Raul Roa Garcia Institute of International Relations of Cuba.

Greener pastures become nightmare for 148 Lankans

All deported, 17 diagnosed with Malaria:

Over 148 Sri Lankan bogus asylum seekers, stranded in Togo after being duped by human smugglers were deported to the country yesterday, with the assistance of Canadian and Sri Lankan authorities and the International Organisation for Migration. They had sought asylum in Canada but had been sent to Togo instead.
