CEB nabs 420 power pirates in May

The CEB has earned an income of Rs 21,953,448.74 following raids carried out on electricity pirates countrywide during last month.

This was made up of Rs 3,770,000 as Court fines and Rs 18,183,448.74 as compensation against loss of revenue, said the Power and Energy Ministry in a press release.

The release said the detections made included 176 instances where metres had been manipulated and 244 instances of tampering with electricity lines using hooks.

The release said 94 electricity pirates were detected in Kilinochchi district during raids conducted for three days from May 19 to 21 alone and the income derived after legal action amounted to Rs 2,226,607. Around Rs 3 million was collected as income during raids conducted in Hambantota district for four days from May 25 to 28 which resulted in 40 detections of pirating.

The CEB requests public co-operation to prevent electricity pirating by informing such cases on the hotline 2422259.
