Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

[May 09 2013]

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

Rise in visa overstayers

Authorities deported nearly 250 foreigners found to have violated Sri Lankan visa regulations during the last five months. They include 137 Indians, the largest by any country and 38 Pakistanis. There were also 17 Thai nationals, Emigration and Immigration Department’s Investigation Unit head Amitha Perera said. “Those deported include overstayers as well as those found to have misused their visas and engaged in unlawful activities,” he said.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa who are in London to attend the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizebeth 11 yesterday participated in the Thanksgiving Service at St Paul’s Cathedral. A large number of invitees participated in the thanksgiving mass held at the St. Paul’s Cathedral yesterday on the sidelines of Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Govt opposes internationalization of national issues

The government’s steadfast position is to categorically oppose any international initiatives which impinge on Sri Lanka’s national issues to ensure the non-internationalization of domestic issues, said Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva in Parliament reading a statement sent by External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris.

H’tota Port begins transhipment trade

The Hambantota Magampura International Port will enter the transhipment trade when the ship Ellision Sun docks at the harbour bringing a consignment of 1,000 motor cars from Chennai, India today. The 1,000 vehicles loaded at the port will be re-exported to Algeria aboard the ship Asian Legend on June 15, said Sri Lanka Ports Authority chairman Dr Priyath B Wickrema.
