Boost for Matara town development

“Massive funds have been allocated by the government for the
accelerated Matara town development work,” Youth Affairs and Skills
Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said recently at the foundation
laying ceremony for the proposed River Park to be constructed along the
banks of “Nilwala Ganga” (close to the Matara Hospital).

The minister also opened the ‘SCK computer centre near Rahula College
recently.
Minister Alahapperuma said the “Nilwala River Park” is built at a
cost of Rs. 158 million. “A 1.5 km bund will be constructed (from the
Matara bridge to Piladuwa) for this purpose together with a Town Hall
near the proposed River Park,” he said.
“The 22km Matara-Hakmana road will be widened by the Road Ministry to
a four-lane highway at a cost of Rs. 400 million from the Matara Bodhiya
to Tudawa. Separate lanes will be constructed on either side of the road
for pedestrians and cyclists,” he said.
“The Colombo-Matara Expressway will be extended from Godagama to Nupe
junction. Construction work of this Expressway will be completed by May
end next year. Rs. 20 million has been allocated for the renovation and
modernisation work of Rahula College Matara main hall.” he said. The
minister said the Uyanwatta stadium will also be given a facelift.
Minister Alahapperuma further said the people are enjoying these
facilities due to the President's farsighted and dynamic leadership. |
