Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

A large group of Sri Lankans domiciled in UK gathered in London yesterday to greet President Mahinda Rajapaksa who arrived to attend the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II. They were seen engaged in a peaceful demonstration opposite the hotel the President was staying in to show their support. They also carried boards with congratulatory words to the Queen. Lankans posing as domestic helps fall into Sharjah police net

The Sharjah Police arrested a four-member Sri Lankan gang and recovered a large quantity of stolen items including gold jewellery worth Dh 220,000, which were smuggled outside the country. The gang comprising two men and two women allegedly stole the jewellery, cash, electronic items, mobile phones, watches and other valuables from houses and apartments in various areas of the emirate, the police said.

President arrives in London for Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa arrived in London yesterday to attend the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth 11. President Rajapaksa and the First Lady will attend a reception and a concert at Buckingham Palace, Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral, a reception at Guildhall and a lunch hosted by Commonwealth Secretary General Kamlesh Sharma in honour of the Queen.

Reduced Iranian crude oil imports raise hopes

The government is hopeful that the US will grant Sri Lanka a concession to import crude oil from Iran as the country has succeeded in slashing Iranian oil imports by 24 percent this year. Sri Lanka has reduced the number of crude oil despatches to be delivered this year from Iran to 10 from 13 by switching to fuel from Oman and Saudi Arabia.

The 50th Poson Mihinthale Aloka Pooja organised by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (ANCL) ends today. The three day Aloka Pooja began on Sunday.
