Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

He said there was a pro-business policy environment in the country with a number of measures in line with the laws of the land to guarantee the safety of investments and ensure a conducive environment to carry out business activities without hindrance.

ANCL illuminates Mihinthale for 50th time

The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd’s (ANCL) 50th Poson Mihinthale Aloka Pooja began on a grand scale yesterday. M/S Abans Ltd is sponsoring the Mihinthale Aloka Pooja for the seventh consecutive year at a cost of Rs 2.5 million. ANCL also opened a well-equipped Children’s Park (Sellam Midula) for Pathiraja Tennakoon Primary School in Mihinthale. The opening ceremony was held yesterday.

Security strengthened in A’pura, special trains for pilgrims

Police have taken measures to strengthen security in Anuradhapura and Mihinthale during the Poson season. Thousands of devotees are expected to converge on Anuradhapura and Mihinthale this season and the Police have made arrangements to provide security for devotees. Police Media Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said over 4,000 Police, Army and Civil Defence Force personnel will be deployed.

Energy bill $ 5 b in 2011
