Coincidentally, President's Counsel Gooneratne completes 40 years of
practice at the Bar on the day of the presentation.
President's Counsel Gooneratne was the first lawyer of the Republic
of Sri Lanka when he enrolled as an advocate on May 23, 1972 - the day
after Sri Lanka became a republic. He therefore, was the first lawyer
who did not have to take the Oath of Allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen
of England.
He was immediately followed by his friend and colleague President's
Counsel M M Zuhair who too enrolled as an advocate.
He had been publishing Neethiya mainly with his personal resources
and the editorial assistance of the members of his Chamber since it was
launched with the presentation of the first copy of the Inaugural Volume
to Chief Justice Paraninda Ranasinghe on November 15, 1990- the 50th
birth anniversary of Patron Gooneratne's friend, late Tivanka
Wickremasinghe who passed away immediately after taking Oaths as a SILK.
At the presentation of the first copy of the 20th Anniversary Special
Commemorative Volume last year, the Neethiya patron informed the then
Chief Justice Asoka de Silva that Neethiya would have to cease
publication thereafter.
Chief Justice Asoka de Silva announced that it should continue for at
least another 25 years.
Chief Justice Dr Shirani A Bandaranayake too had advised that
Neethiya, as the uninterrupted record of our legal system in Sinhala,
should continue at least up to its 25th Anniversary. |
