Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

The Channa-Upuli Performing Arts Foundation brought pride to Sri Lanka by being placed first in a Carnival of Culture in Berlin. They competed with 99 international dance troupes, that is 5,000 dancers, for an audience of one million.

Lanka IDP-free by end July - Northern Gov.

The government will complete the demining process in all land areas required to resettle the remaining IDPs in the North, by the end of July, Northern Governor Major General G A Chandrasiri said yesterday. He also said that the challenge taken up by government officials, Security Forces and the public under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to resettle 295,873 IDPs liberated from the grip of the LTTE, amid doubts raised by the international community, had been met in record time of two and a half years .

National policy to regulate private transport

A national policy is to be formulated to regulate private transport services, especially private buses, three wheelers and school vans. Passengers should immediately notify problems in connection with private buses to the National Transport Commission (NTC) Private Transport Services Minister C B Ratnayake told the Daily News . “I will not protect any offender using my political powers and will not give in to any pressure put on me by politicians,” he said.
