Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

[May 12 2013]

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

[May 12 2013]

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

[May 12 2013]

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

Media Minister takes SF to task:

‘SF’s call, invitation to foreign meddling’

If Sarath Fonseka calls for the withdrawal of Security Forces camps from the North he is indirectly inviting foreign countries to meddle in Sri Lanka’s internal affairs, said Mass Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella. If anyone tried to take undue advantage of a pardon granted to him it will a be a very lowly and unbecoming act on his part the minister added.

SL, Kazakhstan to expand cooperation in all fields - GL

External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris during bilateral discussions on Thursday in Astana with Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhano said his visit to that country grew out of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s vision to restructure Sri Lanka’s foreign relations, by enhancing ties with regions of the world acquiring importance to become centres of growth.

Money laundering, extortion frauds: 17 Chinese to be expelled

The Emigration and Immigration Department will expel 17 Chinese nationals arrested for their alleged involvement in a series of money laundering and extortion frauds, Department sources said yesterday. The Criminal Investigations Department has acted with Chinese Police investigators to arrest the suspects.
