Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

[May 09 2013]

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said, Sri Lanka stands among the worlds best, when it came to implementing welfare measures to support the economic and social well-being of its citizens. Commenting on the extensive reach of free health care, the President said that even a foreigner could walk into any state run hospital in Sri Lanka and obtain health services free of charge.

Parliament Act soon to regulate Intl Schools

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said a Parliament Act would be brought in soon to regulate all International Schools operating in the country. “All telecommunication service providers in Sr Lanka are monitored by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) and they have to follow the rules and regulations set by the TRCSL. Likewise, International Schools too should have a regulatory body” the Minister told the Daily News .
