National Sports Policy

Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage yesterday presented the National Sports Policy of Sri Lanka with the vision of making Sri Lanka the strongest Asian country in sports. The significance of the policy is to introduce legal provision to ensure the election of independent persons to sports organizations.

The policy states that laws in connection with the use of prohibited stimulants and drugs will be introduced in terms of World Anti Doping Agency.

It also declares that a sport drug education strategy will be implemented in the first instance, while steps would be taken to empower an institution to investigate, test and prosecute persons involved in manufacturing, distributing and use of drugs prohibited in sports. The policy introduces a code of ethics to be declared and followed by all concerned to protect its honour and integrity.

Another clause in the policy deals with the grant of tax relief to private institutions which provide various forms of assistance for the development of sports.
