Don’t meddle with the law, warns Police

Over 100 arrested for violent acts :

Police arrested the driver of a jeep that knocked down a woman who succumbed to her injuries in Eravur and another three who acted violently taking the law into their hands, following the incident.

The woman R K Sri Kalei Vani was knocked down opposite Mari Amman Kovil in Chandaramulla, Eravur.

The driver of the jeep owned by the United Nations, was arrested by the Eravur Police. At the time of the incident no one else was in the vehicle.

Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said residents acted violently at the time of the incident and protested by blocking the road. He said three protesters were arrested by the Eravur Police.

SSP Rohana said drivers should be cautious no matter which institution they are employed at, including the Police.

He said no one can take the Law into their hands and act violently, damaging assets, state property or disrupting public service.

SSP Rohana said 105 persons have been arrested so far for acting violently.

Citing examples he said in Akuressa, two police constables were assaulted, the Dompe Police station was attacked and in Puttalam, a police constable who went to investigate an incident was beaten up. The Police Spokesman said they observed certain elements attempting to take the law into their hands whenever an incident occurred or in instances of delay in arresting suspects, or during traffic accidents. He said on any grounds, people cannot take the law into their hands. He said there are many avenues for the public to take action if they think justice cannot be expected from a particular police officer or police station, but those who act against accepted norms would be brought to book. SP Rohana said, with sophisticated technology like CCTV, cameras, videos etc suspects could be arrested sooner or later.
