Children from schools supported under the project funded by the European Union(EU) together with UNICEF across the Eastern Province, gathered to celebrate the success of the project at the Sri Shanpaha Maha Vidyalaya in Muttur. A delegation of three EU Parliamentarians, headed by Jean Lambert joined in the cultural event as guests of honour held to mark the European Union's sustained investments in communities affected by conflict.

Over 100 Children from 18 conflict affected schools in the East displayed their talents through dance, drama and song at the Sri Shanpaha Maha Vidyalaya.

Located in the Eechilampattu DS Division, the school was damaged during the conflict and reconstructed with the support of the EU and UNICEF.

European Union Ambassador/Head of Delegation, Bernard Savage said "These children have had to endure so much in the past, which is why the EU is happy at having been able to enrich and improve their lives and their communities. On behalf of the EU, I take this opportunity to wish them all success for their futures."

UNICEF Sri Lanka Representative Reza Hossaini said "The EU is a generous donor in Sri Lanka, improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable children, families and communities.

It is by developing better quality education and health services that conditions can be nurtured for a sustainable peace and economic growth."

"In Sri Lanka, the EU and UNICEF have implemented a three year project in the Eastern Province under the "Assistance to Conflict affected People" (EU-ACAP) Programme, he said". Over nine million euros is being provided through this programme and includes the construction of 18 schools, refurbishment of 10 health centres, two paediatric and post-natal wards, an office for a medical officer of health, doctors' quarters and one central dispensary.
