Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

 

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa opened the reconstructed section of Udathenna to Mahiyanganaya road consisting of the 18 hair pin bends, popularly known as Daha ata wanguwa para on the Kandy-
Padiyathalawa via Mahiyanganaya main road at a ceremony at Udu Dumbara yesterday. The road has been renovated with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank. Eight bridges and 320 box culverts have been reconstructed while 37 culverts were widened along the road. Meanwhile,

Improved roads, pathways to development - President

*Reduces travel time for people

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday noted that an improved road network has reduced travel time between areas, supplemented development and established closer links between people. “The government’s emphasis on developing roads has ensured that people spend less time for travel and have more time for work. I feel like the country has become smaller due to improved roads” the President added.

Parliament to debate COPE report on May 8

A special full day debate would be held in Parliament on May 8 on the latest report of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE), Human Resources Senior Minister and COPE chairman D E W Gunasekara told the Daily News yesterday. He said that the date on this debate was agreed at the party leaders’ meeting held recently. He said that when tabling the COPE report he promised to facilitate an extensive debate on its content and its recommendations.

Govt minimised price hike burden - Minister

The government has implemented a well organised series of programmes to protect and strengthen the consumers and has been careful to impose the minimum impact on them through the recent price hikes of milk powder and gas, Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando told the Daily News. He said the recent price hikes came into effect after keeping the prices under control for a long period despite continuous demands from the companies.

Lessons in porn

A young man who had in his possession a stock of pornographic videos featuring schoolgirls, with some in their school uniforms, was taken into custody by Ingiriya police on Friday evening. Police carried out the raid on a tip-off that the suspect was secretly selling and lending CDs at his shop in Ingiriya town.
