Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

Polls chief to cancel multiple registrations

The Elections Department will take legal action against persons who have multiple registrations in the electoral list. Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said some persons seem to have taken multiple registrations and deliberately avoided single registration. He said as an initial move, the Elections Department has decided to take legal action against 500 such persons for having multiple registrations in the electoral list.

Red carpet welcome for President in Seoul

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, on a four day official visit to South Korea on the invitation of South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak, arrived in Seoul at 11.40 am Korean time yesterday. The President and the delegation were received by South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Sung Hung. President Rajapaksa was accorded a 21 gun salute following his arrival.

Wet weather to continue

The Meteorology Department yesterday forecast heavy rain and lightning throughout the island during the next few days. Sources said atmospheric disturbances in the vicinity of Sri Lanka will affect weather patterns across the island. Showers or thundershowers will develop over most parts of the island particularly during the afternoon and nights, a department spokesperson said.

Dengue breeding grounds:

Survey in Colombo schools

Twelve special teams of entomologists will conduct surveys in schools in Colombo this week to ensure that the schools are free of dengue mosquito breeding sites, a Health Ministry spokesman said. The entomologists were appointed by the Health Ministry on the direction of Minister Maithripala Sirisena, the spokesman said. He said the survey by the entomologists has revealed that Colombo schools are full of dengue mosquito breeding sites after the New Year vacation. “The ministry has informed school authorities to clean the school premises. School Principals should coordinate cleaning activities.
