Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

Pakistan plane crash claims 130

Up to 130 people were feared dead after a Boeing 737 crashed while trying to land in bad weather near the Pakistani capital Islamabad yesterday, officials said. The Bhoja airline flight from Karachi came down outside Islamabad’s international airport, police official Fazle Akbar said, adding that emergency teams have been sent to the site.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa to undertake state visit to South Korea

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will undertake a state visit to South Korea from April 23 to 27 at the invitation of the President of South Korea, Lee Myung-Bak, said Presidential Spokesman and International Media Advisor Bandula Jayasekera in a release yesterday. During his visit to South Korea, President Rajapaksa will hold talks with the South Korean President.

Guidelines for tremor-resistant constructions

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) is planning to introduce guidelines for future constructions resistant to earthquake tremors, NBRO spokesman and Landslide Studies and Services Division Head R M S Bandara told the Daily News yesterday. He stated that the NBRO has commenced a preliminary study prior to the formulation of these guidelines to gather necessary data.
