Two die in motorbike accidents

Two persons, a rider and the pillion rider died at the Nagoda hospital after their motor bike collided with a lorry near Nagas Handiya in Kalutara North on Tuesday.

D.M.P. Fernando 26, and Vijith Vasantha Kumara 29, residents of Kalutara North were rushed to the Nagoda hospital soon after the accident but succumbed to their injuries, police said.

The driver of the lorry was produced in the Kalutara magistrate's court yesterday.


Lightning kills one

A person died when he was struck by lightning at Alwatta in Rattota on Tuesday.

Police said that the victim, W. Arunakalam was under a Nuga tree in his land when he faced the mishap.

Rattota police are investigating.


Ammunition found with suspect

The Walachchena police found 19 detonators, two foreign made hand grenades and an 81 mm mortar buried under a tree by the side of a road near a paddy field in Kudapokuna in Welikanda.

Meanwhile a person from Uppuweli who had 15 gelignite rods and 20 detonators in his possession was arrested by the Mannar police and produced before the Magistrate who remanded him until 30th April.
