Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

The third year of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa which commences from April 8 will bring more positive transformations to the country, Acting Media Minister and Acting Cabinet Spokesman Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said. He said the UPFA government will complete two years in Parliament on April 8, 2012.

No harassment of returning Tamils

Lord Naseby, PC, Baron of Sandy and chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Sri Lanka said that the allegation made by several Labour Party MPs that Tamils who come back to Sri Lanka from UK are being harassed, persecuted and not allowed their rights, was totally misleading.

Today is Good Friday

Today is Good Friday where Christians the world over commemorate the death on the cross of Jesus Christ. In Sri Lanka too, Good Friday is observed with great reverence among the Christians, marked by penance acts of mortification and other sacrifices during the Holy Week culminating in the main Good Friday service depicting the three hours’ agony of Christ’s passion.
