President visits Parliament
President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited Parliament
and attended sessions for a while yesterday. According to the
provisions of the 18th amendment to the constitution, the President
should attend Parliament at least once in three months.

Regulations aimed at regulating aquacultural societies in SL
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa presided when
Parliament met at 1 pm yesterday. After the presentation of papers
and oral questions, the House took up several regulations under the
National Aquaculture Development Authority of Sri Lanka, Act No 53
of 1998 for debate.

Converting Indian Ocean into Zone of Peace:
Sri Lanka planning to explore new approaches to revive concept
Acting External Affairs Minister DEW Gunasekera
told Parliament yesterday that Sri Lanka was planning to explore new
approaches to revive the concept of converting the Indian Ocean as a
Zone of Peace, despite the heavy opposition from major power players
in the UN. He said that Sri Lanka had taken this initiative several
decades ago, but had been confronted with heavy resistance from the
US, the UK and France.

‘Adhere to Standing Orders’
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa yesterday, advised the
Members of Parliament to adhere to Standing Orders, when they raise
supplementary questions during questions for oral answers. He made
this observation when UNP MP Sajith Premadasa, raised supplementary
questions from Social Services Minister Feliex Perera. The Speaker
also stated that the supplementary questions should be raised in
connection with the matters directly involved with the answers given
by the minister for the question of the member for oral answer.
