Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

SL’s rebuff to Channel 4 tomorrow

A new video documentary by the Lankan state – a sequel to Lies Agreed Upon – to counter the allegations leveled at the Sri Lankan Armed Forces in the Channel 4 documentary will be screened tomorrow for members attending the United Nations Human Rights Council sessions.

‘Present allegations to LLRC with evidence’

‘Channel Four should present the allegations they make against Sri Lanka Army with evidence to the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) instead of dramatizing their old video clips taken from open sources of pro-LTTE websites’, the Sri Lanka Army yesterday said. “NGO activists,such as, Pakiasothy Sarawanamuttu, Sunila Abeysekara, Nimalka Fernando and Sunanda Deshapriya from Sri Lanka, could have done the same, if they had any true interest in Sri Lanka’s human rights situation”, states the Army.

Four thousand Buddhist monks, other religious leaders at today's Adishtana Pooja

An Adishtana Pooja and Satyagraha organised by the Surakimu Maubima National Organisation, to defeat anti-Sri Lankan forces and conspiracies will be held at 4.00 p.m. today at the Viharamaha Devi Park, Colombo. Over 4000 Buddhist monks and Hindu, Islam and Christian religious dignitaries are expected to participate in the Satyagraha campaign along side this Adishtana Pooja.
