Nishantha and Roshita take National Carrom Titles
Anuradha ABEYSEKERA
D. Nishantha Fernando and Joseph Roshita won the National titles in
the 44th National Carrom Championship concluded at the Carrom Federation
headquarters, High Level Road, Maharagama recently.
Nishantha created the main upset in the tournament by defeating
defending champion Chamil Cooray in an exciting final which played for
three sets (25/7, 16/25, 25/13). Nishantha played his usual attacking
game and beat Chamil Cooray who did not play up to his standard to
secure his crown. Chamil lost the National title after nearly eight
years. Previously Nishantha won a National Championship in 2001 and
coincidently he wrested the title from Chamil Cooray in that occasion as
well.
Nishantha booked his place in the final by beating Lahiru Eshan
(25/0, 25/01) while Chamil defeated Ajith Chandrasoma (25/20, 25/2) in
the other semi final.
In the women's singles final, Josep Roshita lost the first set
(23/25), but fought back with skillful display of slicing and shots to
win the second and third sets (25/14, 25/18) against Madushika
Kanchanamala. Roshita played intelligently but Madushika did not give up
till the end. Roshita won the title for the second time and previously
she bagged it in 2010.
Roshita trounced the defending champion Chalani Lakmali in the first
semifinal game (25/15, 8/25, 25/19) while Madushika entered final by
defeating Yasika Rahubaddha in the closely contested other semi final
(25/23, 21/25, 25/18).
Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka conducted the tournament and six
events namely, Men's/Women's Singles, Men's/Women's Doubles, Mixed
Doubles and Veteran's Singles (for over 40 years) were worked off in the
44th Nationals.
