Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

Action Plan for LLRC implementation

An Action Plan detailing how recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission(LLRC) report could be implemented in the country’s North, will soon be handed over to the Ministry of Defense by Sri Lanka Army. Acting Spokesman for the Sri Lanka Army, Brigadier G V Ravipriya yesterday told the Daily News, a board comprising senior officers of Sri Lanka Army had formulated the Action Plan on how to implement the recommendations stipulated in the LLRC report.

Motor Traffic Dept to network with Police Department and judiciary through online system:

The Police will shortly introduce a Driver Improvement Point System, which was approved by Parliament last Thursday. This point system will be implemented in the near future. The Motor Traffic Department will network with the Police Department and judiciary through an online system to implement this special point system successfully.

Lankans in France protest US move

Thousands of Sri Lankans living in France yesterday voiced their anger over attempts by United States to meddle with the internal affairs of Sri Lanka by moving a resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council’s (UNHRC) session in Geneva. Sri Lankans in their thousands thronged to the area near the Eiffel tower in Paris in protest of reactionary forces that are conspiring to revert the country’s progress march after three decades of conflict.
