Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

Massive demos against Geneva resolution

Tens of thousands of people across the country took to the streets yesterday to condemn a resolution sponsored by the US and the West against Sri Lanka that is to be moved at the 19th United Nations Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva. They voiced their anger over attempts by United States and Western countries to meddle in the internal affairs of the country under the cover of human rights.

Minister Samarasinghe at 19th session of UNHRC:

Urgency for resolution unjustified

Plantation Industries Minister and Special Envoy of the President on Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe yesterday said there was no justification or urgency to float a resolution calling for the implementation of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) recommendations and engagement with the UN High Commissioner for HR when this has already been effectively undertaken by the government.

Join hands to defeat conspiracies - Mahanayake Theras

The Mahanayake Theras of the three Nikayas in a joint statement yesterday have called upon the people to shed all petty differences and join hands with the government to defeat all foreign conspiracies aimed at undermining the country’s development efforts and the communal and religious unity and amity now building up. “If the people go against a government they themselves have elected by raising issues regarding temporary economic problems and other differences, it would only contribute towards the country’s downfall,” they said.

Extensive reconciliation measures underway - envoy

Sri Lanka has progressively adopted a broad range of measures to facilitate reconciliation after May 2009 when the conflict against terrorism ended, Sri Lankan ambassador Jaliya Wickramasuriya told a gathering of the Serendipity Group of retired US diplomats. He said international pressure might make it difficult to enact the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission's (LLRC) recent recommendations.
