Youth held for abusing teenager

A youth was arrested by Akmeemana Police for allegedly abusing an underage girl of Haliwala in Akmeemana, Galle. Police investigations reveal that the youth had a love affair with the minor and molested the girl.

 

Electricity projects in Uva

[June 13 2013]

The Uva Provincial Council has provided electricity facilities for 4,966 households in the Mahiyanganaya Divisional Secretariat area between August 2010 and June 2013. The Provincial Council will provide electricity for 947 more houses to reach the target.

 

Foreign brand cigarettes seized

Anacondas from SL Zoo to India

Chicks, frogs and fish will top the menu for the young anacondas that will be brought from Sri Lanka to the Mysore Zoo in India. Zoo officials have decided to place additional orders for the supply of chicks at the poultry farm, Kudappanakkunnu. The zoo will get seven green young anacondas from Sri Lanka.

 

Indian Police nab 14 Lankan refugees

Indian Police on Wednesday arrested 14 Sri Lankan refugees, who allegedly had plans to illegally sail off to Australia from Kochi, from a lodge near the Ernakulam KSRTC bus stand.

 

Lankan arrested with gold biscuits in Chennai

Indian customs officials at the Chennai airport seized four gold biscuits each weighing 100 grams from a Sri Lankan passenger, who had reportedly concealed them in his underwear. The four gold bars were carefully wrapped in black paper making it impervious to scanning and were stuffed in his underwear,

 

Fire in forest reserve

At least five acres of forest was destroyed when a sudden fire broke out in Ravana Forest Reserve in Ella Police area. The police had managed to cease the fire being spread further more in the area also identified as “Punchi Siripade”.

 

Heavy rains to continue

Heavy showers can be expected in the coming days over many parts of the country since the South West monsoon is now active, a spokesperson for the Meteorology Department said.

‘No grounds to fault SL’

There are no grounds on which any country can point fingers at Sri Lanka for not implementing what seemed necessary for achieving post-war justice, ethnic reconciliation and national cohesion as it participates in the 19th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, said Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Develoment Minister Rajitha Senaratna yesterday.

Divi Neguma third phase launch on April 5

The third phase of the Divi Neguma programme will commence on April 5, ushering an agricultural revolution, Economic Development Ministry Additional Secretary R R A K Ranawaka said. Surveys will commence on March 1 in connection with the third phase, he said. “This will continue until March 31. Three officers, comprising Grama Seva Niladharis, Samurdhi animators, agriculture officers, agricultural consultants, tea and rubber inspectors or agrarian service provincial officers will visit every housing unit from March 1 to 31.
