Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

Subsidy bonanza for fishermen

Government yesterday announced unprecedented relief measures to the fishing community who would be affected by the fuel price hike. Accordingly a fuel subsidy of Rs. 30,000 will be provided to every multi-day fishing trawler while a one day fishing boat will receive a fuel subsidy of Rs. 18,000 per month. Addressing the media following a crucial meeting with representatives of district fisheries organizations Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said this subsidy will also to be extended to the boats with kerosene-driven engines.

Commonwealth unity vital to face int’l crisis situations - PM

“It is pertinent for Commonwealth countries to act in unison in facing international crisis situations. ‘A united stand will enable them to resolve problems amicably in a transparent manner,” Prime Minister D M Jayaratne said when he met a Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) delegation led by its Executive Committee President Sir Alan Gordon Haselhurst who called on him at the Prime Minister’s office yesterday morning. The delegation is in Sri Lanka for a preliminary round of talks in preparation for the CPA 58th sessions to be held in Sri Lanka in September.

Disagreeable conduct - Dinesh

Record turnover by SLCTB on Monday

The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLCTB) had made a record turnover of Rs 80 million on Monday, SLTB chairman Shashi Welgama told the Daily News yesterday. This amount is nearly double the usual turnover. He observed that the usual daily turnover of the SLCTB is Rs 45 million. He said that the private bus strike was the main reason for the record turnover. He noted that the SLCTB full fleet amounting to about 5,000 buses was put into operation on Monday to minimize the inconvenience caused to the public due to the strike.
