Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

The Central Bank yesterday reaffirmed that Sri Lanka’s financial systems would remain stable and resilient, despite Fitch Ratings in a recent report including Sri Lanka in a high risk category. Sri Lanka was listed by Fitch Ratings as among a group of high-risk financial systems in Asia, which also include India and China, in a report released last week.

Flood-affected rises

The number of families affected by heavy rain and floods have increased, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said. The number of families have increased by around 126 and the number of affected persons have increased by around 60. A total of 35,833 persons belonging to 9,686 families have been affected by rain and floods during the past few days, the DMC said.

SriLankan to recommence flights to Zurich

SriLankan Airlines has taken measures to recommence operations to Zurich, Switzerland in line with the continuous expansion of its global route network, sources said. Zurich will be the 60th destination in SriLankan’s global route network. The airline has launched services to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Kochi and Moscow during the last 11 months.

Reforestation in 2,000 hectares

The Forest Conservation Department (FCD) has carried out reforestation in about 2,000 hectares of forest land during 2011, FCD Conservator General H M Hitisekara told the Daily News.He said that special attention was given to reforestation in hill tops. Accordingly, 386 hectares of forest cover had been replanted in hill tops during this year.
