PHIs urged to test water for cleanliness

Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) should send at least two water samples from their areas every month for testing, Health Ministry additional secretary Dr Palitha Mahipala said.

Water testing facilities are available in Colombo, Kalutara, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala and few other areas. A Regulatory Committee on Water Safety has also been set up by the Health Ministry, he said. Dr Mahipala was addressing a seminar at the Health Education Bureau, Colombo in connection with 'National Water Safety Week' recently.

The theme of this year's National Water Safety Week is protecting water from the source till it is consumed.

A walk was also held from Independence Square/SLFI to Mahaweli Centre on Monday to mark the commencement of the week.

The public can test their drinking water free of charge through mobile laboratories, he said.
