Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

UNP Colombo District MP Mohan Lal Grero crossed the well of Parliament and sat with the government yesterday when the vote of the second reading on the Appropriation Bill was taken up by name. MP Grero was warmly welcomed by Human Resources Senior Minister D E W Gunasekara and the other ministers, deputy ministers and government members.

Diaspora could contribute towards Northern development - President

The Diaspora could contribute in a significant manner towards development of the North, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said. “We have launched several programmes to develop the North and help our people there. There is a need to provide entertainment for the people of the North and more facilities for sports and recreation in addition to building more hotels.

Budget second reading passed

The vote on the second reading of the Appropriation Bill 2012 was passed with a majority of 91 in Parliament yesterday. One hundred and fifty one members voted in favour while 60 members voted against the Appropriation Bill. Second reading commenced on November 21 with the budget speech by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Parliament.

World AIDS Day national ceremony today

Today is World AIDS Day. The national ceremony to mark this day will be held at New Bazaar Maternity Home, Colombo under the patronage of Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, a Health Ministry spokesman said. Colombo Mayor A.J. Muzammil will also participate in this ceremony followed by the National AIDS Walk, he said. This is the first World AIDS Day national ceremony to be attended by the public.
