Army women clinch club championship

Sri Lanka Army SC emerged champions when they defeated Sri Lanka Air
Force SC by 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out in the final of the inaugural
Women’s Club Soccer championship 2011 at CR and FC grounds yesterday.
Airwomen took the lead in the first half of the match when Radhika
Sewwandi netted the first goal in the final. Kumudumala Liyanage came
with an equalizer for Army SC which paved the way for a penalty shoot.
Having equal scores at the end of the first half, both teams tried to
dominate each other in the second session but failed to find the net.
Army women kept their fame as undefeated footballers in the final when
they scored 3 goals to reply Airwomen’s 2 goals.
Sri Lanka Air Force entered the finals when they defeated Sri Lanka
Police Sports Club by 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out at the same venue last
Tuesday.
Army women cleared their way into the final by defeating Sri Lanka
Navy by 2-0, battle ground being the same.
C S Francis of Sri Lanka Air Force was adjudged the best player of
the tournament while best goal keeper award was presented to Sri Lanka
Army SC goalkeeper A N A S Wijeratne for her excellent work by having
let the opponents to score only five goals in six matches in the entire
tournament.
Youth Development Chairman of Football Federation of Sri Lanka Dr
Manil Fernando presented the trophies, medals and certificates to the
winners at the same venue.
