Bus driver pleads guilty

A private bus driver who pleaded guilty to reckless driving, causing the death of two schoolgirls was ordered to pay Rs 250,000 as compensation and fined Rs 5,000 by the Provincial High Court judge, Kurunegala last Friday.

The victims are M K Lakmali and Anusha Kumari of Wariyapola Abalawa. The accused, Kuruppu Arachchige Saman Liyanage was charged for negligence, leading to the accident, resulting in deaths of two schoolgirls on the Kurunegala-Puttalam main road at Wariyapola on December 4, 2002.

When the case was called before the court, the defence attorney told court that the girls were crossing the road after school.

The investigations against the accused was not in order. He is a 31-year-old married man and have two school going children.

The witnesses of this case gave false evidence against the accused.
